The Feast

In the video work "The Feast," I use performance video to reflect on and critically think about historical nihilism. Historical nihilism is a trend that tends to deny the authenticity and objectivity of history; linguistic fallacies often change the record and transmission of history like an ant's nest undermining a dike.

In the work, performance art serves as a means of expression. The work prints English words with incorrect syntax on fresh food, cooks them over fire, and then has actors dressed in court-style costumes sit upright but swallow the food whole, like a bolt. Just as people crave food, they often have an unconscious trust and thirst for language. When history is subtly altered by language into rumors "fed" to the public, how do we guard the truth of history and resist nihilism? The question is left in the work, and the answer may appear beyond the screen.
